Veliky Novgorod (until 1998 Novgorod) is one of Russia's most historic cities and the administrative centre of Novgorod Oblast. The city lies along the Volkhov River just below its outflow from Lake Ilmen. Novgorod is among the most ancient cities of the East Slavs. The Sofia First Chronicle first mentions it in 859.

Novgorod on Venemaa ajaloolisemaid linnu, esmakordselt kroonikates mainitud 859. aastal. Volhovi jõe ääres asuva linna suurimad vaatamisväärsused on Kreml ja kirikud.
