* "Tolstoj's grandfather was Prince Volkonsky of the Rurikovich. He served for some time in the Arkhangel province, and he named his village Grumant, which was what the "pomory" - northern people - used to call Spitsbergen. And it seemed that a fragment of far-away Norway existed near Jasnaja Poljana, at a distance of three kilometers. The writer enjoyed his trips to this charming village with its four houses, one of which was a summer house, full of smells and memories of children and horse rides. * Yasnaya Polyana was the home of the writer Leo (LeV) Tolstoy (1828–1910), where he was born, wrote "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina", and is buried. It is located 12 kilometres (7.5 mi) southwest of Tula, Russia and 200 kilometers (120 mi) from Moscow. In June 1921, the estate was nationalized and formally became his memorial museum.
