*  THE WOLF AND THE LAMB
Ivan Krylov
(1769 – 1844)

Always are the weak at fault before the strong.
In history we hear a host of examples,
But history we are not writing:
Here is how they tell of it in Fables.
- - -
A Lamb, one sweltering day, came by a stream to drink.
An lo, calamity had to befall him
In that a hungry Wolf was scouring about nearby.
He sees the Lamb and rushes to his prey;
But, to give the deed the look and sense of law,
He yells, “How dare you, you rogue, immerse your filthy mug
In my pure drinking water,
and cloud it with silt and sand?
For such impertinence
I will indeed remove your head!” –
“His Highness Wolf permitting,
I will dare submit that I am drinking
About a hundred paces downstream;
His wrath is all for naught:
I cannot possibly pollute his draft of water.” -
“And thus I lie?!
You wretch! Such rudeness is unheard of in this world!
And I remember, too, a couple of summers back,
You, in this very spot, insulted me!”
“For goodness’ sake, I am not a year old yet,”
Pleads the Lamb. “It was your brother, then.”
“I have no brothers.” “Then some other relative,
Or someone of your ilk.
You all, your dogs, and all your shepherds,
You wish me ill
And hurt me any time and any way you are able.
But I will make you pay for all their sins!”
“Oh, but how am I at fault?” – “Shut up! Enough!
I’ve no time to sort through your transgressions!
You are at fault that I am famished,”
He said – and dragged the Lamb into the woods.

* HUNT JA TALLEKE
Ivan Krõlov

Mustmiljon näidet ajalugu teab,
et tugev nõrka kõiges süüdi peab;
kuid me ei hakka ajalugu kirjutama,
vaid valmi keeles kinnitame sama.
- - -
Üks Tall läks kuumal päeval oja äärde jooma,
ja, ega õnnetused tulles hüüa,
ta pidi kohtama seal Hunti, kurja looma,
kes kohe tahtis teda ära süüa.
Et aga seaduslikku nägu anda teole,
Hunt käratab:  "Ma näitan sulle, reole!
Sa ütle, et
mis õigusega
sa ajad sogaseks ja segad
siin minu selget joogivett?
mispärast, julgen öelda, pole õige see,
et mina sogastan teil joogivee."
"Mind ära valelikuks tee,
sa nurjatu! Et kuule aga hullu!
Ei ole veel mul meelest minna lastud,
kuis tunamullu
sa sama toorelt haukusid mu vastu."
"Oi heldeke; ma pole aastanegi,"
nüüd lausub Talleke." "Su vend siis seda tegi!"
"Mul pole vendi." - Aga sinu tõugu
üks lurjus lõksutas siin mulle lõugu,
võib olla isamees, või vader, nimekaim,
kust mina seda teadma pean.
Teil, karjastel ja koertel, sama vihavaim
on minu vastu, küllap  seda tean
ma ammust ajast: soovite vaid kurja
ja kavatsete karata mu turja!
Kuid sinuga kõik arved õiendan ma nüüd."
"Mis on mu süü?"
"Pea suu! Sind kuulda ma ei taha!
Aeg küps on hambad sulle sisse lüüa.

* ВОЛК И ЯГНЕНОК

   Но мы Истории не пишем;
- - -
Ягненок в жаркий день зашел к ручью напиться;
Ягненка видит он, на добычу стремится;
От Светлости его шагов я на сто пью;

* World War II resistance organization The Young Guard (Russian: Молодая гвардия) was an underground anti-fascist Komsomol organization, in the German-occupied Soviet city of Krasnodon (Ukrainian SSR, now Luhansk Oblast of Ukraine). They were active during the Great Patriotic War until January 1943.
Massive arrests began on 5 January 1943 and lasted until 11 January. All the arrested people were tortured. 71 of them, along with members of the Communist Party underground, many of them still alive, were thrown into the 53-meter deep pit of Coal Mine Number 5 on 15, 16, and 31 January 1943. Oleg Koshevoy, Lyubov Shevtsova and the others were shot on 9 February 1943 in the town park of the town Rovenki. Just five days later, on 14 February 1943 Krasnodon was liberated by the Red Army.
Soviet writer Alexander Fadeyev wrote the book "Molodaya Gvardiya" (The Young Guard), in which he depicted the activities of the Young Guard.

* "Noor Kaardivägi" on eestlastele tuttav eelkõige Aleksander Fadejevi samanimelisest romaanist.

* ELEPHANT AND PUG
Ivan Krylov

Along the streets Big Elephant was led,
To show him off, most likely.
Since Elephants are not a common thing to see
A crowd of gapers followed on his heels.
All of a sudden Pug springs up in front of them.
And seeing Elephant, it raises a great rumpus,
It lunges, barks and howls
And does its best to pick a quarrel.
"Hey neighbor, stop the fuss,"
A mutt intones, "You? Deal with Elephant?
Look at you barking yourself hoarse, and he just strolls
Nonplussed
And doesn't care one bit about your noise."
"Ho ho!" Pug says,
"That's just what I enjoy,
Since I can be a real tough guy
Without a single blow or bruise.
That way, the other dogs will say:
"To bark at Elephant this Pug
Must be a real strong mug!"

* ELEVANT JA MOPS
Ivan Krõlov

Kord linnas talutati Elevanti -
vist tsirkuse reklaamiks, nagu näis,
salk uudishimulikke tema kannul käis
ja vahtis imelooma igat kanti.
Ei tea kust äkki - väike Mopsi-nähvits
lõi elevandi kannul vihast vurri,
ta näitas hambaid, ajas karvad turri
just nagu haukuda ta klähviks
mõnd endataolist.
"Jäta oma jant,"
üks karvanäss siis andis talle nõu,
"saad aru isegi, et sulle üle jõu
on tülinorimiseks Elevant.
Sul, vaesekesel, juba hääl on kähe,
kuid talle, näe, ei üldse korda lähe,
et tema vastu
sa klähvid sedasi, -
ta muudkui astub
ühtviisi rahulikult edasi."
"Äh, äh," Mops aga vastab talle kähku;
"just nimelt see mu teebki vapraks,
Oi, Mopsi! Näe, kui kange koer on ta,
et julgeb Elevandi peale haukuda!"

* СЛОН И МОСЬКА

И лаять, и визжать, и рваться;
